All kinds of "incorrect" combinations will often work somewhat. It's when the conditions are not very good -- cold weather starting, stale gas, weak battery, etc, that we find out that the wrong coil really is wrong. Or, if using a coil of a lower voltage rating than the battery, or a ballast-type coil without a ballast resistor, the spark is plenty good but eventually the coil overheats and/or the points burn out. The bottom line is just because it fires up and runs doesn't mean it's all good.
