I finally got the left trunnion/knuckle separated on my ’49 B1 and have run into a small dilemma. The upper bronze bushing is pretty well scorn (couple of BIG scratches in it) and the lower trunnion bearing is seized to the kingpin. There was very little play in the assembly before I took it apart and what play there was could probably be taken up with removing one of the shims.
The scratches in the bushing are deep but aren’t raised and the cup isn’t scratched. Should I replace the bushing and cup or could I run it this way? I don’t plan on putting a bunch of miles on the truck but I also don’t want to have to rebuild it again, EVER. If I do replace it, is there anyone out there that sells the bronze bushings? Greg Coffin’s book states that the lower bearing will fit in place of the upper bushing. Has anyone done this? With a bushing, the trunnion/knuckle is supposed to be “shimmed” to have 25 to 27 ½ foot-pounds of resistance, what should it be with two bearings? (I assume lower?)
I’m going to get a small gear puller to pull the lower bearing off. (it WILL be replaced). I’m also going to be replacing the axle oil seals, axle bushings (inner and outer) and have new felts and gaskets (thanks to Adirondack Dodge Parts!). Anything I’m missing? Are there any words of wisdom from those of you that have “been there done that”?
Thanks in advance,
