If you post a picture we can tell by looking. From what I understand the later model 420's that were introduced in 1956 are syncro's for third and fourth, and you can identify it because the shift tower where the shift lever comes sits further forward than the non-syncro versions.
Another clue might be the date stamped on it. My 56 has date of 56 on it, and I also have a later version with a later date.
