Okay, I don't really know whether the PPM is useful, but bitterness is easily detected by the tongue. Fresh motor oil is like corn oil, no taste, really only feel of oiliness. Old oil gets rancid- sour, bitter, acidy.
You needn't lock the dipstick either. Just get one drop on your fingertip, spread it with the thumb, and then touch it to your tongue.
