My rebuilt PTO was slowly leaking oil out the front shift rail. It had a newly fabricated shift rail, so I know it was not pitted. The only thing I could think of was I did not apply any kind of sealer on the seal when I installed it. So, off to the Federated and for ten bucks I had two seals, and I was really not looking forward to the drama of removing out the old seal....

I read a few posts about using a slide hammer on self tapping screws, which sounded like a reasonable approach, but them I decided to make a seal puller that would allow me to pull the seal without touching the shaft.

The OD of the shift rail is 3/4", so I took a 1/8" aumuminum and drilled a 7/8" hole in it, and four holes for me self tapping screws. I slid the puller over the shaft, screwed the four screws into the old seal, and in two seconds pulled the old seal out with a tap from the hammer.

When I put the new seal in I coated the outside of it with silocone and pushed it in as far as it would go. As it turns out, I had enough room to put a second seal over the first with about half of it sticking out.

If you can see this picture, it is the puller with the seal held by the four screws.

I'll let you know tomorrow if it leaks!

Wayne
