I am a Weldor, yep, that's spelled right. a welder is a welding machine, a weldor is the guy stuck on the end of the lead. My niche has always been with heavy equipment repair, mainly, sure, Iv'e done all that other stuff too but I always lived where there was mining, logging, steam plants, that kind of stuff. I work when I want or need to, there is always something to fix, the only problem is if you fix it right the first time, you never get or have to do it again Rambleing here I guess. What I really wanted to say was if I wanted to work or needed to work I would go to the Bakken Oil Fiels in N. Dakota. My son and I took a couple of motorhomes to Williston, N. Dakota a couple of weeks ago. He is in to trucking there and I went for the ride. There is more work going on there than I have ever seen anywhere else, including Alaska, of course I was on an island. Ha! I visited with the Caterpillar parts Supervisor there, he told me they have 680 wheel-loaders rented out and are buying 200 more. There are motels popping up like mushrooms, one I was told is rented completely for the next five years by one company. I was also told there are 200 new building permits for residential houses. I saw numerous billboards with hiring notices, I saw a hot-dog stand with a help wanted sign for $18.00/hr.
The problems are: High rent, costs $1,000.00 or more to park a trailer or motorhome, if you can find someplace to park.
Wind. Dust, traffic. Unbelievable traffic, trucks, drill-rigs, crasnes, trucks, tankers, trucks and more trucks. I talked to local weldors, yep, weldors, and they told me they were making $125.00 to, hard to believe, $350.00 per hour. Most would admit to $150.00 an hour, at the end of the day I saw approx. 25 or so welding rigs around stores, rest, etc. They work around the clock there, drilling, trucking, work, work, work. Here, there are very few portable welding trucks running around.
Am I going? No,I'm too old to give a darn. Life is short, better get our priorities right. But if I were young... or wanted to work, that's where I would go.It seems that most people go for a few weeks at a time and then take a couple off.
