this is what my input gear looked like on my NP200. If yours looks anything like this I'd think it could shift when loaded in different directions and catch the gear on the non-worn teeth, and then slipping to the worn teeth.
I'd also make sure it is fully engaged, can you feel the ball actually snap on the shaft when you change from high to low and forward to revers?
