They bear a significant resemblance to the shingle saws they used to use to make cedar shingles in Everett in the old days. The old-timers would tell me they were responsible for a lot of nicknames like "stumpy" and "three-fingers". I prefer a pivoting rather than sliding chop saw, partly because it's more portable and partly because it can't sling the blade towards you if it grabs. The only catch is they won't cut wide boards.
