For a chemical to "melt" ice, it basically lowers the freezing point of water. The chemicals that do this are known as "salts" in the chemical world. There are chemicals known as "acids", and as "alkalines". "Salts" are corrosive to metal, so it isn't going to make much difference what they call it or what color it is, it likely is harmful to unprotected metal, including copper or aluminum.
