The correct Dodge tool (not likely) or a large/deep set of calipers (not likely), or you can do as I did, with two 1.5" of angle iron and a standard set of calipers.
It's not the most elegant or precise method but with a lot of care and some consistent technique it can be made to work.
This is my technique, use at your own risk. No guarantees or warranties implied or other wise intended.
I drilled a hole in one side of each piece of angle iron so that they could bolted on to the carrier caps using the locking bolt holes. Be sure to place the holes so that the carrier assembly can still rotate with out them interfering and the other wings of the angle iron facing up and towards the carrier.
With them in this position you should be able to get your calipers across and over them while clearing the ring gear.
Pleas note:
The parallel attachment of the two pieces of angle iron is critical to a good measurement.
Measuring at the same point on each piece of angle iron is critical to a good measurement.
If the inside wall of the angle iron is tapered (almost all are) making it parallel to the outside surface or some very good repetitive placement to a consistent point on each piece is critical to a good measurement.
God Bless,
Will
