Every time I look back at a purchase, I wonder the same thing, did I waste money and/or time. I can honestly say yes. Have I learned from each time, I hope. Remember hind site is always 20/20.
As for the Dana 70, it's a great HD axle. My brothers 3/4 ton V-10 powered Dodge has one, and except for a drive shaft issue causing pinion seals to wear it's been a great axle. For a daily driver on a HD truck it's a great axle, a little too massive for good off serious road use though.
The conversion to 8-lug should be as simple as a hub swap, but I have no experience with this axle.
Sorry I can't be of any more help, but keep the head high and keep searching. The parts/solution is out there and you will succeed. Don't keep looking back, you will miss the opportunity in front of you.
