You want it in to push against. The seal has a very large metal casing and can be hard to remove but the pinion shaft does not have to come out.
Check my link below, you can see how I pulled mine. Worked very well if you have a welder. I have seen others do the same by drilling and threading a bolt/screw into the seal as well.
I pulled mine off the truck but no reason it wouldn't work on the truck just as well.
