Agreed. I probably learn more from them than they will ever learn from me. And it is not all of them that are incompetent - far from it. I would expect that there are only a few less than perfect ones. I can imagine it takes a whole lot of smarts to get through those classes. I have even seen some that I thought didn't stand a chance in the real world, stick it out, learn from others, and go on to be really good at their craft.

My point is that it is probably not any different today than it was 70 years ago. There are people now that probably should have chosen a different path. There were people then that probably should have chosen a different path. In the end, I try and share what I have learned and hope it makes them better. Some don't listen and they go onto design something that can not be built. Or something that is going to cost way more than it should to build. I know there are machinists out there that just cringe at some of the Engineering drawings they are asked to build to. And some of these guys will follow the drawing to a "T" without raising concern or asking for clarification even though they know better. Some will do it out of spite just to see something or someone fail. These people are no less to blame.

I don't think we are graduating better Engineers today than we were 70 years ago. I don't think we are providing better engineering that we were 70 years ago. In fact, a lot of what we are doing today has already been done before with less tools than we have today. Those were the brilliant minds. Today, we seem to spend a lot of time just figuring out new ways of applying tried and true principles and techniques in ways that will line someone's pockets a little quicker.
