maybe the capability to prduce stronger steel but we are talking about the auto industry. no way the bolts are better now than then in the auto industry. unless you are talking sppecific brnads of cars. jeeps used butter like botls and nuts on everything in WW2. Chrysler products did not. just to straighen a small bend out of a winch mounting brfacket on one of my trucks it took a 50 ton press. I tried to straighten a bumperette on a carry all with a rose bud and a 12 pooound sledge and I could not make it move at all.
also look at how long these things have lasted. if it was hapazardly thrown together out of random metals they would not have lassted nad would not have the reputation they deserve. how many of those bolts break off when removing them? very few.
