Depending on the model the batteries can be expensive. The 18-volt dewalts are about $40 for the NiCad and closer to $80 for the Lithium. The Lithium are lighter and can be recharged more.
The new 20-volt line of DeWalts are basically the same hardware but use a different type of battery pack that tends to be cheaper.
If you use them very heavily batteries life would be an issue. For the average home user, even a heavy home user though my original set of batteries lasted at least 5 years.
Honestly I got the second drill because it was only another $100 to get the drill and battery packs over the batteries alone, and I get a second charger too.
Once you have a few batteries you get also get bare tools for pretty cheap to build out your kit. The impact driver without batteries can be purchased for less than $100.
