Roller bearings primarily wear due to stress hardening of the rolling surfaces. So it would be fairly obvious if they are already bad but not as much if they are getting close.
If you do need shims I picked up a set from McMaster Carr that had the right ID, but were a little bigger OD than the stock ones but they fit fine and came in a pack with just about any thickness you could want for about $25. They also had packs of individual thicknesses too.
