I don't know if they still do this, but when I was a kid, the tourist traps along the "redwood coast" would sell pieces of burls sliced off of redwood logs. You'd put the cut side down in a dish of water and little trees would start growing out of the top and then you could take and plant it in the ground. Redwoods and sequoias will grow from cuttings, unlike most conifers, which is why the scientific name is "sempervirens" which means "always alive". In the forest, the fallen trees sometimes take root and sprout, or the stumps of broken-over or burned trees sprout new trees.

They also grow really fast if the conditions are good. I see 2nd-growth logs on the logging trucks that are 3 feet through in the time it takes a doug fir to get half that size. So, if you start one from cuttings, you'll probably live to see it get pretty big. I don't know how old "maturity" is for a tree that lives 1000 years.
