The brushes are probably welded to the field coils. if so, they can only be replaced by changing out the coils.
If you will do this work from time to time, buy one of these impact drivers:

It will allow you to remove and install field coils. For the slotted screws, use a drag link socket bit. If it is too wide to fit the heads of the screws, grind a little off the bit until it fits.
