Almost everything I own was once owned by someone else. I rarely buy anything new. This is true for my trucks, my household items, my tools and so on.
Every purchase is different, but as a general rule of thumb, buying things second-hand is a delicate negotiation. This is true even in flea markets and second hand stores where haggling is expected. It becomes even more evident when buying large ticket items where haggling is not always expected, nor welcomed. Be honest and forthright in your dealings and everything works out for the best. Whether you end up striking a deal, or paying full price, or walking away with nothing, you can hold your head up knowing you did your level best to treat both yourself and the other party fairly. If you feel they are not matching your honesty, it is time to walk.
It sounds like you handled yourself right and the deal just wasn't meant to be. It does happen to all of us.
