Pull the no. 1 spark plug.
Have an assistant turn the engine over manually. As the indicator approaches TDC, place your thumb over the spark plug hole. If number 1 piston is on the compression stroke, it will blow your thumb off the plug opening. Stop at the TDC mark. If not, no 1 is 180 degrees from compression. Keep turning until you feel compression.
