If your Gear Vendor or Advanced Adapters Ranger OD is mounted between the engine and tranny, its transparent to the operation. If you get a OD that mounts after the T Case on the rear drive shaft, you can not use OD in 4x4. Further some OD's that mount after the tranny will self destruct if the OD is engaged and you shift in reverse.
