I would be checking the for a stuck float/stuck needle valve at the carb inlet. I had one on my 54 Fargo PW stick closed, and it would only run when gas was poured down the carb throat. If I remember fuel pump design, they are pulled down mechanically, BUT only pump up under spring pressure. If the needle is stuck shut, the pump will not pull fuel up on the suction side, as the diaphragm is held down by the pressure remaining on the output side. Once it builds up output pressure to whatever the pump is rated at, no more fuel will be moved until that pressure is bled off i.e.: fuel goes into the carb and into the intake.
My truck was running, then sat for awhile, and wouldn't start. Went through most of the trouble shooting process you are, and finally figured it was in the carb. The carb had been rebuilt a month or so before, and had been running perfectly up until then. I took the fuel line off at the carb, and removed the needle and seat assembly. It was clean, but stuck solid. The rubber nosed needle was "bonded" to the brass seat. Replaced the "new" rubber needle with and old brass one, and it has been running fine ever since. My best guess is that the stuff they sell us as GAS up here was a big part of the cause.
Try removing the line at the carb, and turning the engine over. If you have fuel flowing there, it is definitely a carb problem.
