the 426 Hemi was allowed to race Nascar in 1971, but the rules were changed and the engine could not be run in a wing car. Wing cars were limited to a smaller CID engine and some were raced this way.
The engine and car developement by all the major brands was extraordinary by 1970. It would only be a matter of time before the others caught up....if those makers were lacking, then Dodge/Plymouth would not have been forced to build their radical wing cars in the first place.
If you look at the Nascar racing history for 1969-70, the Daytona and Superbird did not exactly sweep every race. They just happen to be the coolest looking and most unusual, and the first to top 200 mph.
