no it is actuall fairly light for a hardwood, some heavier than others depending on which side of the the continental divide and altitude anoung other varialbes
the center looks like walnut and the outer is lighter in color
they even make guitars out of it here as it is very stable
I am going to make surfboards out of it using a hollom balsa subframe decked top and bottom with diagonal running balsa, ruff shape it then veneer it with the laurel and finish it off
