I think he was referring to the approx. 1/2" hole on the back plate of the water pump. It's my understanding that the hole was added to allow some flow into the engine when the the thermostat is closed on non-bypass engines.
If the water pump has the hole, it can be used on either type engine. I hope I'm right, I just installed such a pump on a '48, which, I believe, is a non-bypass engine.
