Once the shoes get worn to the drum, you shouldn't re-adjust heel. The shoe pivots at the heel eccentric, and wears at the toe. Changing the heel pivot will make the shoe not fit to the drum any more. It will either grab, or give a soft pedal because the shoe flexes.

Oh well, the shoes will wear back in to the new heel eccentric quickly. Though your problem may be air in the system. Many guys have probs getting the air out, what with the large master cylinder system it is easy to run out of fluid and suck fresh air into a nearly bled system.

To test/calibrate the mechanical temp gauge, remove from the dash and the head, immerse the bulb in boiling water. It should read 212. Careful, that is not a wire from the head, it is a small tube. To get the bulb out of the head, remove the freeze plug above the sender first, and force the bulb out from the inside by prying. That is what that freeze plug is for.
