Hi Steve,
My seam cover was pretty bad so I removed the outer piece, and sandblasted the seam. I put 2 parallel strips of masking tape, one on each side of the seam, and filled it with black polyurethane caulk. I then tooled it off flush with a thin putty knife. I removed the tape at once. I shot some rattlecan red oxide primer over it when it had set up. It has worked very well for about 10 years. I would never consider using silicone for that.
