could you be sucking in air somewhere in the pickup lines? does it have the big zenith fuel filter mounte dby the voltage reg? if ANY air is getting sucked into the system it will reek havoc with the way it runs or doesn't run. And fuel may NOT leak out if the leak is up by the stock filter because the fittings are too high up to leak fuel but can suck in air. been there.
