I just went out and measured. From the widest part of my 9.00x16 tires to the bolt head on the spring clamp (the shortest distance in a straight line) is 3-3/4 inches of space.
Let's see. If you subtract one inch away from this for clearance between the duals, that leaves 2-3/4 inch. If you follow Mike's rule and take away two inches from the dimension you end up 1-3/4 inch. Allow an inch for clearance between the inner dual and the leaf spring and this brings down the allowable width of the inner dual to 3/4 inch even. I guess you could run a 10-speed bicycle tire as your inner dual, but not much more.
