I don't know what caused it but my guess was that the years of use had already given it a crack underneath the grease where I couldn't see and then it finally went. I didn't notice it until I was in the mountains, got vapor lock and was under the hood wiring up my electric pump. hmmm what happened here, what the heck...
I think in newer rigs they started putting a u-joint in the shaft so as not to put so much stress on the column when flexing. Even cars have them.
