honeycomb radiator( just wondering)

just wondering if anyone knows why honeycomb radiators were used in 2wd trucks and cars in late 40s early 50s i have a 47 plymouth and a 50 dodge 2wd both have honeycomb rad. but my 48 b1pw does not just wondering thanks jan
