Back when father was young they (he) had whisle they put in that such a hole. I've got it and it looks like a steam whisle to me. I stuck it in the hole and it does make a hell of noise. (Dad called it an explosion whisle) I took it out as the valve did not seal too well and I't rather sertain it affected compression on number six (sarcasm). I concur with the rest. It's there for timing.
