The limiting factor in the 230 are the offset rods. This is why the RPM tops out so low.
You might want to consider hot rodding a 251 or 265, since the rods are not offset. A good balanced 251 or 265 should rev out a bit more, plus be able to take more power with speed equipment, not to mention the added power it has in the first place over the 230.
If it was me, I'd have the bearings pinned and the engine balanced if I was going to hot rod a flathead.
