I too questioned that when I discovered ATF in my Ford F250's 5-spd and T-case. I discussed this with one of my employers oilers and was told that virtually all manufacturers are going that route now primarily for fuel economy. Makes sense as the lubrication properties are the same. I've got about 90K on mine now and with fingers crossed all seems well.
