Air filter under seat

The vol. Fire Dept I am a member of has an old Dodge Power Wagon for our brush fire unit. I am in the process of re-wiring this truck as it has 40 years worth of accessory wires making a mess of it. While looking under the seat, I find this little air filter and a hose going somewhere under the truck. What is this thing for?
