Cheap, strong, less prone to bending than regular round stock and also available nearly everywhere. If you are afraid of bending the rods, there may be something wrong with your transfer case or with how you are shifting the t-case. Simply shifting into 4-Low with the hubs disengaged is the all time simplest way to do what you propose.
