I think a significant drawback to conversion to propane is that you get quite a bit less energy out of propane (or even natural gas) than you do out of gasoline, so you will experience a pretty noticeable drop in power.
The best way to take advantage of propane is to raise the compression ratio of an engine to somewhere in the neighborhood of 14:1. Of course, our flatheads will not stand up to that.
The place where I used to work had a propane-powered flathead engine in a forklift. It ran very well, but always seemed underpowered. Of course, it might have been that way to a large extent prior to the conversion. I don't know.
Anyone else have experience with this, especially with regards to flatheads?
