My first suspicion on this is as Drew mentioned, the push rod for the master cyl. If it's too tight, the pressure relief hole will not be opened when the pedal is released. The fact that it seems to stop after traveling also tends to add merit to the saturated shoe linings heating up and expanding. Let us know what you find.
