A number of people saw me have this exact problem just before the 1999 York PA labor day parade.
The truck was fine and I used it for lots of local trips. Then I did a 50 minute drive to York at 45mph. The brake pedal got rock hard and the brake shoes didn't release from the drums - causing great friction/heat and slowing me significantly. I pulled over, backed off the shoe adjusters so I could move the truck and then let the drums cool in a sfe place.
So what was the cause, actually two. First, I had misadjusted the master cylinder puch rod without enough free play. It was not allowing the brake pedal rod back enought o release the pressure in the m/c and brake system. I imagine you adjusted the rod to the correct freeplay - so did I before I had the brakes lock up. Instead, I loosened up the rod adjustment and set the brake shoe to drum clearance to specs. It took at least an hour to get a decent feeling brake pedal but worked great from then on. Second, the rear shoes had slight oil fouling from a previous seal leak and the shoe material expanded when it got hot - causing more binding and reducing the shoe to drum clearance. The rear shoes were relined locally.
Hope the above helps you out.
