Fine splines (involute) are stronger for both of the reasons mentioned; the minor diameter is larger, the tooth pitch makes more contact thus spreading the force more evenly across the spline, and there are more teeth to make contact.
The process is called 'spline rolling'. The compressed metal adds more strength.
