If the indicator lamp is not coming on it is unlikely it is [only] the vacuum motor, or are there wires associated with that mechanism so it can communicate with the indicator lamp? I would have to get under my '01 to verify, but I am thinking there were no wires there.
Regarding the vacuum mechanism, there are kits available to cable-control that shift mechanism in the passenger side of the front axle. This makes it wonderfully mechanical.
