Not "cooled well", but block heats and expands.

Once the block heats up the bore expands, leaving adequate clearance. Flathead valves are lots closer to the exhaust valve heat than V engines.

Like piston-to-pin clearance. Zero, as long as you can push it in by hand. The pistons get real hot, and loosen up.
