Since my '50 is going to be parked for a week or two, I figure I can do a few things to it that need attention. The absolute FIRST thing I want to do is get those ugly, Ford-imitating square side mirrors off of it. I have the original passenger's side mirror, but it's been severely dented in.The bracket is still fine, though.
Next on the list is to get a rear-view mirror. My '54 parts truck has one, but is super-crusty and the glass is cloudy to the point of being unusable. As much as I like the original mirror, I think it looks too small to even be able to see the entire back glass in.
I agree with most of you about the 5 on 6 7/8” lug bolt pattern being a defining characteristic of our trucks. I am DEFINITELY installing Dana 60/70 differentials under my truck, but am going to install the originals in my parts truck. I'm going to eventually use the parts truck as a wood hauler, so it'll be beaten around some, and you can never have too many spare gearsets. The same goes for my '47 parts truck- if it can be saved, it's going to be.
I just re-installed the generic, poorly-operating aftermarket wiper motors after rewiring them both to a single switch. I really dislike them, and have been looking around for something that can help us solve the age-old wiper conundrum. So far, I have solved the wiper pivot and motor arm part by using 1969 VW Beetle parts (yeah, they aren't American. But I'd rather use them instead of something from a worthless GM or Fjord piece of trash). The VW wiper motor is too tall to fit in the header, so my next thought is to try a boat wiper motor or maybe one from a Gator.
Okay, so here are my questions. 1) Does anyone have a set of factory mirrors or just a driver-side bracket they'd part with? 2) What do you guys have for your rear-view mirrors? Something has to share that mounting pattern. 3) Any luck at all with wiper that work yet? The motor remains the stalemate.
Take care!
