Alaska is getting all of your snow. Valdez has received 80" in the last four days and broke 300" yesterday.
Cordova is getting similar amounts and declared a state of emergency two days ago and 60 National Guardsmen and a bunch of heavy equipment arrived yesterday to shovel snow off roofs and clear roads. Problem they have now is that they are running out of snow shovels as handles and blades are breaking. The city contacted the major distributors in Alaska and they had none to send so they are working with a manufacturer to deliver direct and they should receive the supply on Tue. That is if a flight can reach them.
Valdez will likely be declared as a disaster area very soon. Prince William Sound Community College, part of our University of Alaska system has found stress cracks in one of its buildings and may need to close. They don't have the manpower to keep up with the snow load on the roofs. The university is hoping to send a crew from Anchorage to assist tomorrow.
On the home front here in Soldotna we are expecting at least a foot tonight. About two months ago, Gordon's site had a discussion of whether we should call our trucks, "Flat Fender Power Wagons--FFPW," which was a lively conversation. Regardless of what we call them, I can tell you that my 61 WM300 has the most snow catching flat square footage of any rig I've owned. Can't tell you how many times I've brushed and swept that truck this year...gotta build a roof over it next year. Our trucks not only have flat fenders they have lots of other flat places as well.
Want snow? Send money and we will ship it down by barge. We've had our fill and have 3-4 months of winter left. This will be a year where most all snow and cold records will be broken.
