I ran a drill press like that a mere 25 years ago. The motor mounts at the floor, speed changes while running by 'slapping' the flat belt back and forth with your hand. One side for faster, other side for slower.
And over the years, I restored a couple of band saws. One 30", later a 36". Megalomaniac was my nick name.
Much equipment is not ruined by that much heat. The rust probably did more harm. Check around the shafts fro melted babbit that poured out. Let me know if you need a lesson on babbit or bearing scraping to within 1/2 thou. The band saw blade guide, a vertical square part, was probably in babbit too.
