thnkas good to hear it from the source. An automotive engineer friend of mine who has worked for Mercedes, Hyundai, Chrysler and maybe one or two of the japanese companies describes japanese engineering in a similar way. he says they reverse engineer everything until it breaks and then just make it strong enough to not fly apart.
