I dont think you will break any in the 6x6. load is spread out. drive till you break one the maybe look at that option. it would be the leaset expensive to do it the way you suggest with the cups or locking hubs out on the ends. that way you could just have splines cut in round stock. and run locking hubs or have flanges made.
