An exhaust heated "hot spot" under the carb works faster and better, but it needs thermostatic control to avoid overheating as the manifold warms up. Sidedraft carbs with a short manifold length wouldn't need heating- think motorcycles and snowmobiles.
If you're going to do multiple carbs, sidedraft is the way to go- you keep all your low end, and pick up more top end. The primary problem is keeping the carbs synchronized.
