He might have pumped unleaded into his tank.
Depending on how much, symptoms could be misfiring, stalling at stop, failure to restart, no start.
Depending on how much was ran into tank, fouled injectors, ruined pump, detonated piston(s).
Easy to make mistake when driving tired.
