On the newer dirty/wet fuel can damage the injectors, thus causing damaged engines.
I'd guess he might have gotten into either some dirty or excessively high ration bio-diesel. the Bio-Diesel will gell quicker, and if it's a low quality can plug up a system very fast. My brother have a lot of issues with Bio-Diesel from some norther facility that was made from animal by-products.
